This sequence is from a real life Call of Duty Zombies short I did and I got a lot of questions about the grenade explosion in the video. This is the project file of that full scene and we covered how to do the muzzle flash part in a previous tutorial.
This is just the section with the explosion from that sequence but we are actually going to make it look better than this since I was extremely pressed for time while making the vfx of the video.
One cool thing from the original video are these chunks of blood and meat flying from the explosion and this is something that I talked about in another tutorial where we explore how you can use all kinds of assets such as dirt charges and debris and make them look like gore elements.
We won't be covering too much of that since I already made a tutorial for that, instead we are going to focus on the explosion.
Another thing that I'll throw in as a bonus at the end of this series is how to delete people from your scene since this is something I had to do for my shot because the actors in the scene were still visible after they reacted to the blast.
This is the final updated result that we will achieve by the end of this tutorial series. We are going to look at how to 3d track a shot and create an explosion with fiery elements, shock waves, heat distortions, shadows, ambient occlusion, all within After Effects with just a few assets from Action Essentials 2 and Detonation films.
So lets get started by selecting our in and out points of our clip. And, by the way, as a quick side note before we begin, I mentioned I'll be using Action Essentials 2 and Detonation Films assets but that doesn't mean you have to have those assets in order to follow along or learn from this. Just like any other tutorial, the effect and tools used to obtain that effect are just practical examples of what you can achieve by applying certain techniques. So don't feel discouraged in following along if you don't have the same assets that I'll be using, the tips and tricks will be the same for any explosion.
