Need to convert a model to all quads? Check out interesting free work-in-progress tool ArtMesh. The software, which imports and exports in OBJ format, automatically converts all-triangle meshes fed into it into “quad-dominant surface meshes”, and can also retopologise existing all-quad meshes. Limited control, but a good starting point for other workArtMesh is a command-line application, so it isn’t the most artist-friendly of workflows, but you do get some control over the output via a set of optional parameters, explained in the software manual. The resulting mesh will probably need some refinement before use, but as a way to shortcut tedious manual work, it looks well worth a try, and the developers are asking for feedback if you want to suggest new features. AvailabilityArtMesh is available as a free trial from Topologica.org. The current version is valid until 20 July. The software is Windows-only, and comes in 32- and 64-bit editions.
