Red Giant Software has released Magic Bullet Suite 12, the latest update to its suite of colour grading tools, adding support for GPU acceleration, and Magic Bullet Film: a new plugin for emulating vintage film stocks.

The other six plugins in the collection – formerly known as Color Suite, and compatible with common desktop editing and compositing software – have also been updated.

Is this Magic Bullet Suite or Color Suite?On its blog, Red Giant describes the name change as a process of “un-renaming” the product.

The company’s original, larger, Magic Bullet Suite was previously split into two separate collections: Shooter Suite, which is still available, and Color Suite, now renamed back to Magic Bullet Suite.

“No matter how much we tried to tell you it was Color Suite, you all kept calling it Magic Bullet Suite in your emails, phone calls, and web searches,” admits the blog post, ruefully.

So what’s new in version 12?Version 12 of the suite introduces a new tool, Magic Bullet Film, intended to mimic the look of real-world camera film, replicating 22 different negative stocks and 4 print stocks.

The plugin is GPU-accelerated, as now are sister tools Magic Bullet Looks, Colorista, Mojo and Cosmo, building on work Red Giant did for Universe, its new online plugin library.

Since almost every tool in the suite has been updated, we’d refer you to the Red Giant website for individual lists of changes, although the news release below summarises the key additions.

Pricing and AvailabilityMagic Bullet Suite 12 is available now, price $799. All of the component tools – which are available separately for between $99 and $399 – are compatible with After Effects and Premiere Pro.

Updated 25 September: Red Giant Software has released a new free update, Magic Bullet Suite 12.1.

There aren’t too many major changes: Cosmo, Mojo and Looks now support DaVinci Resolve, with Looks’ new Trackpad Mode enabling you to use a control surface with the plugin, should you own one.

Colorista gets a new Cutout mode for its keyer, for layered colour-correction; and its Show Skin Overlay option for colour-correcting skin tones has been reinstated “by popular demand”.

In addition, the plugin now supports OpenCL and CUDA for GPU-accelerated playback inside Premiere Pro.
